Temporary closure of 18th Street ramp at the Jane Byrne Interchange

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of the ongoing Jane Byrne Interchange reconstruction, the ramp from 18th Street to I-90/94 will close for approximately six weeks starting, weather permitting, at 5 a.m. Monday, April 12.

The closure is needed to construct an overhead sign structure foundation and is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. Monday, May 25.

A detour will direct traffic west on 18th Street, south on Union Avenue, west on Cermak Road, north on Halsted Street, east on Roosevelt Road, to connect to westbound I-290 via the Ruble Street ramp. Motorists will continue north on Ruble Street to connect to northbound I-90/94 via the Taylor Street ramp.

Motorists should expect significant delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limit and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

The overall reconstruction project at the Jane Byrne Interchange will improve safety and traffic flow for the more than 400,000 motorists who use it each day, while also enhancing mobility for bicyclists, pedestrians and transit users in the surrounding neighborhoods.
