Construction Overview
The Illinois Department of Transportation has taken a unique approach to reconstructing this interchange. Construction to rebuild the Jane Byrne Interchange began in late 2013 and was broken into 35 separate contracts or project components with the idea that construction would be completed in three major stages:
- Stage 1 – Cross Street Bridges
- Stage 2 – I-290/Ida B. Wells Drive
- Stage 3 – I-90/94
During Stage 1 construction, cross street bridges primarily along the west and south were removed and rebuilt while design continued for Stage 2. As Stage 2 construction is underway, design for Stage 3 progresses.
